Masters Program - Mental Health Services for Older Adults

Our Masters Clinic offers individual and group therapy and case management services for those 55 and older who have a mental illness. We work to help increase the ability to lead happy, independent, productive, and socially integrated lives. Masters uses a holistic approach to the ever-changing needs of our clients.

“Our services go beyond therapy. We help clients deal with a full spectrum of life issues including housing, peer support, social interactions, and changes with aging.”

Why Do We Need Mental Health Programs For Older Adults?

Mental health conditions do not discriminate — they impact people of all ages.

Globally, the population is aging rapidly. As reported by the World Health Organization, between 2015 and 2050, the proportion of the world’s population over the age of 60 years will nearly double, from 12 to 22 percent. Of those aged 60 and over, approximately 15 percent live with a mental disorder.

Mental health has an immense impact on physical health and vice versa. This is why it’s important to address the complications of substance abuse, diminishing mental health, elderly abuse, and other key areas of concern. Whether you’re seeking treatment for yourself or are worried about a loved one, support is available.

That is why at Valley Behavioral Health, we have developed our Masters Program. Offering individual therapy, peer support, case management, medication management support, and more, we help adults ages 55 and older lead happier, more independent, and productive lives. It is never too late to seek support, especially when it comes to your health, life satisfaction, and overall quality of life.

We’re here for you.

Older Adults Are At Risk of Mental Health Disorders and Substance Abuse

In the United States alone, by the year 2030, approximately 75 million adults will be over the age of 65. Of this population, as many as 15 million live with a mental health condition, substance abuse disorder, or both. Although aging is a fact of life, this process creates unique challenges, many of which test both your physical and mental health.

Whether you or a loved one are dealing with a disability, chronic pain, a functional decline in ability, loneliness, bereavement, frailty, or other health problems, there are many variables that can contribute to worsening mental health and the desire to self-medicate. From elderly abuse to medication management, Valley’s Master Program covers all the bases.

In terms of mental health, the most common conditions impacting those ages 55 and older include severe cognitive impairment, anxiety, and mood disorders. Depression is the most prevalent mental health condition among older adults, and although common, it is not a normal part of the aging process. In fact, 80 percent of cases are treatable, that is why it’s imperative that you take a proactive approach. Help is available and new skills can be developed, regardless of your age.

As reported in a 2014 review, substance use among older adults has been under-identified for decades. While alcohol remains the most commonly abused substance among older adults, illicit drug use is more prevalent among American older adults than among older adults in nearly almost every other country. In addition, older adults take more PTC and prescribed medications than younger adults — and in 2012, nearly 3 million adults over the age of 50 reported using psychotherapeutic medications for non-medical reasons in the past year.

How the Masters Program Can Help

At Valley Behavioral Health, our Masters Program provides support for the growing senior population, ensuring those in need get the support they deserve. Much like all other treatment options offered through Valley Behavioral Health, the Masters Program is a highly personalized, holistic program. After all, there are many considerations when it comes to the aging population, including physical, psychiatric, and social factors. We take all of these variables into consideration, providing services that go beyond therapy.

This program was developed in conjunction with the Vital Aging Project, a national award-winning recognized best practices program. Focused on improving the lives of the aging population, as well as those who care for these individuals, Valley offers wellness classes at nineteen senior centers across Salt Lake City. Covering topics such as resistance building, pathways to cope with grief and loss, mindfulness, and more, such topics support those aiming to treat a mental health or substance abuse disorder.

Licensed mental health therapists are available on a regular basis, offering individualized services and classes which promote positive well-being. Best of all, the services and treatment options offered through the Masters Program can be accessed at the Masters Senior Clinic, within select housing complexes, or even at your own home.
